Welcome to the project blog for the 2015 Undergraduate Summer Research Project “History Speaks: Using Oral Histories to Teach Historical Thinking” directed by Dr. Shelley Rose and Dr. J. Mark Souther and sponsored by the Cleveland State University Office of Research. Here you will find oral histories from the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection (CROHC) curated specifically for use in a Social Studies classroom. In addition, essays examining the pedagogical uses of oral history and oral history methods, including model lesson plans, will be published on the CSU Social Studies @ CSU blog throughout the summer. History Speaks has four main goals:
- to explore the pedagogical uses of oral histories and oral history methods
- to provide model lesson plans for Social Studies teachers using oral history
- to identify and clip oral history sources in accordance with Ohio State Social Studies Standards, the ELA Common Core standards and the National Council for the Social Studies C3 Framework
- to develop best practices for logging oral histories for pedagogical purposes in collaboration with the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities (CPHDH) with a focus on the CROHC.
